Bulldogs take hold of top spot in district

The Marlin Bulldogs football team traveled to take on the Riesel Indians on Friday in a battle for the top spot in the district standings. Marlin came out victorious, defeating Riesel 28-12 to claim the top spot in the district. 

Marlin jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. The scoring came from a 23-yard touchdown pass from Roderick Suiters to D’Mariion Butler and a 12-yard touchdown pass from Suiters to Mario Hopwood. 

Riesel responded with 12 unanswered points in the second quarter. Those points came off of a 1-yard touchdown run and a 14-yard touchdown. The third quarter was a defensive battle and had no scoring from either team. Marlin increased their lead in the fourth quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by Suiters to make it a 21-12 lead. The Bulldogs sealed the game with a pick six from Caden Judie to increase their lead to 28-12 and win the game.

Despite throwing the interception, Roderick Suiters had a great game, throwing for 149 yards and two touchdowns along with rushing for 53 yards and a touchdown. D’Mariion Butler was also impactful, catching two passes for 30 yards and a touchdown. Mario Hopwood was outstanding, rushing for 77 yards, along with catching two passes for 31 yards and a touchdown. With this win, Marlin has a record of 5-2 and a district record of 4-0. 

Up next, the Bulldogs will travel to take on the Bruceville-Eddy Eagles for their Homecoming game. The game will be on Friday, Oct. 20, and kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
