Hairpin match leaves Bulldogs with district spot

The Marlin Bulldogs varsity basketball team lost Tuesday’s bi-district playoff game against Bosqueville in a nail-biting quarrel. The Bulldogs played their hearts out, but the rival dogs pulled it out in the end.

Marlin took the tip off, but Bosqueville nabbed the ball and made the first shot of the evening. Ty Harris was the first to make a basket and brought Marlin to the lead with a stellar three-pointer. Tydae Mayes and Keyshawn Thomas made contributions to the scoreboard as well, while the opposing team banked a couple free throws.

The teams headed into the second quarter with Marlin pulling ahead, 9-5. Derion Gullette and Tre Thomas were quick to score, taking the Bulldogs further and further ahead. The two teams ran the score up after that, with Bosqueville closing the gap one three-pointer at a time. Fans were on the edge of their seats as the boys headed into halftime a mere three points apart.

The Marlin Bulldogs went into the third quarter ready to rally. Marlin quickly overtook the Bosque offensive to make a shot. Time went quickly as both teams dominated the court. Bosqueville defense couldn’t keep up and by the time the buzzer rang they had pulled ahead even more.

The dueling Bulldogs went into the final quarter of the match with a score of 36-30. They continued to take turns adding to the board, but Bosqueville kicked it into overdrive. The Marlin defense couldn’t keep up as the opposing team brought the game to a tie with back to back shots. They continued to pull ahead point-by-point, adding to the board six times before Marlin could manage another shot. The score was at 48-46 with the timer dwindling quickly. A foul on Marlin gave the opposing bulldogs another chance to score, going into the final countdown at 49-46.

Despite the loss, the Bulldogs head out of the 2021 season with the feats of a district title, undefeated season, and a number of honors for the players.

All-District team players were announced this week as well.

The resulting honors are as follows: Co-MVP, Derion Gullette; Defensive MVP, Tydae Mayes; First Team All-District, Tydarren Harris, Tre Thomas, and Keyshawn Thomas; Second Team All-District, Mario Hopwood, Kjahmarrey Wilson (So.), and Elijah Davis (So.); and Newcomer of the Year, Tremayne Richardson (Jr.).
