Lady Bulldogs back in the fight

After a somewhat promising showing in the Bremond Tournament, the Marlin Lady Bulldogs kept the momentum they found going into this weeks match up against the Hearne Lady Eagles.

For Coach Claretta Kanigo, the improving play of her young squad bodes well for the future of the Lady Bulldog program. With just three seniors DyNeisha Bailey, Maisha Evans and Jalen Chappell, the coach has leaned heavily on the play of five underclassmen, including two freshmen.

That group includes junior LaRachel Taylor, sophomores Danielle Nobles and Kerriae Davis, and those two freshmen, Alieghseya Washington and Aniyah Williams.

It was the strong play of Williams (5 blocks, 3 kills) and Nobles (3 blocks, 4 kills) in the Hearne game that helped fuel the Marlin victory. The two Lady Bulldogs proved strong and effective at the net for the team. It was their athletic ability that showed as they continually won points for Marlin in the win.

Meanwhile, the offense got a boost from the 5 service aces fired up by LaRachel Taylor. It was her service consistency that helped give the Bulldogs the edge in some closely fought games.

The Lady Bulldogs dropped the first set 25-14 but responded by winning the next three sets by scores of 25-23, 25-16, and 25-22. Overall it was a performance that the coaching staff felt good about as the young ladies demonstrated the ability to not only win but also withstand a furious charge by the opposing team and then finish off the game. Those traits will be important going forward for the team as they continue to develop throughout the year.

This Friday they travel to West to play the perennial top Ten State ranked West Lady Trojans. It will be a tall test for the young Lady Bulldogs but a definite experience.

Tuesday they have a game against the Lady Yoe from Cameron scheduled in a non-district contest.
