Lady Bulldogs named area track champs

The Marlin girls and boys varsity track teams competed in the area competition on April 13, where the girls varsity team brought home the area championship. Athletes left it all out on the track and quite a few are headed to the regional competition, girls and guys.

The girls 4x100-meter relay team, made up of Taliyah Davis, Aniya Williams, Kendria Hayes and Aleighseya Washington, brought home first place. The girls succeeded in repeating their victory in the 4x200-meter relay.

Davis was a standout at the area competition, bringing home a total of five gold medals. She brought home solo golds in the 100-meter hurdles, the long jump, and even set a new personal record of 34’ 11 ½” to go with her gold medal in the triple jump.

Teammate Laneshia Massington was a regional qualifier in the 400-meter dash and Kendria Trotter overtook the 300-meter hurdles by storm.

The boys team competed well too, though they fell just short of being area champions.

Trajon Butler and Derion Gullette each brought home three gold medals.

The two both participated in the 4x100 and 4x200-meter relays with teammates Tydae Mayes and Jeoffrey Mims. Butler also brought home the gold in the 100-meter, while Gullete was the shot put champ and will continue to regionals with a placement of third in the discus competition. Mayes was the long jump champ with an impressive 21’2 leap.

Congratulations go out to qualifying athletes, who will head to the Regional Track Meet on April 23-24 at Palestine High School.
