Marlin senior guard Mystique Womack scores a layup in front of Lovelady players as teammate Yasmen Maxwell (5) looks on. Johnson stepped up to run the offense and pick up some scoring slack when Womack was forced to the bench with foul trouble in the first half. The Lady Bulldogs pulled away in the second half and beat Lovelady, 58-43, to advance to the regional tournament Friday and Saturday at Bryan High School.

McKenna Johnson’s contributions to the Marlin girls’ basketball team are usually in a complementary role, playing in the same backcourt as University of Alabama signee Mystique Womack.

But with Womack saddled on the bench with three personal fouls in the first half of the Region III Class 2A quarterfinals Monday night, the freshman guard took center stage.

Johnson scored 14 points and ran the offense like a seasoned veteran and Marlin pulled away in the second half to score a 58-43 victory over Lovelady at Leon High School in Jewett.
